- From 1 July to 31 December 2025, Denmark will hold the Presidency of the Council of the EU. In its programme, the Danish Presidency set out its main tax priorities for that period:
- to advance, and possibly conclude, the negotiations on revising the Energy Taxation Directive
- to advance initiatives aimed at countering tax evasion and tax avoidance, including updating the EU list of non-cooperative tax jurisdictions and further develop the tools used by the Code of Conduct Group to identify harmful tax competition;
- to support a continued strengthening of administrative cooperation, including revising or expanding the Directive on Administrative Cooperation;
- to further the tax decluttering and simplification agenda in order to reduce the burden on businesses and strengthen the EU competitiveness;
to strengthen the EU Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism;
- to support a revision of the Tobacco Taxation Directive if a proposal is tabled; and
- to continue negotiations on the Customs Reform package (including addressing the challenges of e-commerce) to reach a final agreement with the European Parliament
- Timing: the Danish presidency runs for six months between 1 July and 31 December 2025, the priorities listed above all have different timelines.
